How to be Alone
By Nikki H | 0 Comments

Being alone is such a funny thing.  Sometimes it's beautiful, peaceful and free!  And other times, it's soul-achingly empty.  This poem-turned-video about being alone is uplifting and fun to watch.  The poet, Tanya Davis, provides her quirky insight on why it's fine to be alone, plus she has some great suggestions on how to be more comfortable with yourself.

The Story of Bottled Water
By Nikki H | 0 Comments

Laura wrote a blog post a while back about The Story of Stuff.  She linked to a video that showed how our insatiable desire for "stuff" is not sustainable.  Shockingly, 99% of the "stuff" we buy is trashed within 6 months.  That's hard on our Mother Earth, folks!  The below video, created by the same people, shows us one simple thing we can do to tread lighter on our dear planet: give up bottled water.  The energy used to create and transport the bottles, plus the waste created by the emptied ones are devastating to our planet.  I've got my reusable water bottle sitting here at home, and I'll be sure to grab it on the way to work tomorrow.  Are you a fan of bottled water?  If so, could you give it up for a couple days? A week?  Give it a try - and let us know how easy or difficult it is!

Warren Buffett - Investor, Philanthropist, Love Bug
By Nikki H | 0 Comments

Well, friends, as it turns out, it looks like we all may have something in common with Warren Buffett!  Sure, he's one of the most successful investors of all time.  Yes, he's a multi-billionaire.  And ok, he's one of the most influential people walking on this planet. (I'm not sure about you, but I don't fit into any of those categories.)  However!  Guess what someone as brilliant and as experienced as Buffett values above all else?

Love!

Unconditional love!

The "Oracle of Omaha" is a love bug!  Maybe that's the real secret to his success??  Check out this short two-minute video to hear it in his own words.  He also throws in some cheeky advice at the end about biting your tongue.  Good stuff, Warren.  Thanks for sharing.  ;o)

Marvelous Melancholy
By Laura S | 2 Comments

Melancholy

Its time to clear something up. Just because we're into positive affirmations, doesn't mean we're happy-go-lucky, in wonderful bliss all the time. Wouldn't that be annoying? What kind of super human person never feels anxious, stressed, sad, restless, confused?

I believe that there are infinite ways to view every situation, and its this viewpoint that determines our reactions and ultimately the course of our lives. It takes practice and a willingness to see things in a different way that shifts our minds. That's why affirmations are powerful. They remind us to make the choice to see things in a better way, a way that helps us be gentle with others and ourselves. But its not flawless and there are other emotions to experience besides joy and bliss. When I feel like I'm trying and trying to see things differently and I can't fight anymore, its time to give in. I have to let go, to give in to the marvelous melancholy. I find myself listening to beautiful, sad music, writing in my journal, going for walks, taking a bath, moving through a... Continue Reading

So Much for Location, Location, Location
By Nikki H | 1 Comments

Damon Baehrel has an incredible restaurant.  Some of his guests have waited 1 or 2 years to get a table.  Rumor has it that the Obamas are on the waiting list. His restaurant has one of the highest Zagat ratings in the country (Zagat is a consumer-based restaurant scoring guide).  There is no menu – you get what you get and the price is over $100 per person.  Virtually all of the food served is grown by Damon on his property or sourced from nearby farms.  One enthusiastic diner claims that “there is no food experience like this in the world.”

And where is this restaurant?  Not Manhattan.  Not Paris.  Not LA.

Sanctuary
By Laura S | 0 Comments

The CaveOne of my sisters (I have four) has a room we call "The Cave." It is our sanctuary. I smile when I recall the countless hours we've spent up in that room talking, laughing, writing in our journals, stretching, meditating, having a glass of wine or a breakthrough. The colors in the room are themed around a print of Starry Night hanging on the wall - rich blues, aquas and gold - like the ocean.  She often plays what I call "tinkly spa music" with flutes and Asian chimes. She has objects that she loves placed around the room with care and attention. She lights delightful smelling candles like pineapple cilantro and lavender. I feel so peaceful up there. I feel like I can think through situations and challenges with more clarity. I often think that everyone needs a place like this, a sanctuary where they can go to step away from the world and reset.  Do you have a sanctuary? Is it in your home? A yoga studio? A place in nature? What makes it feel comforting to you? If not, where would you consider... Continue Reading

Within Organics Takes On Starbucks
By Nikki H | 2 Comments

Can you believe it, dear Within fans?  Starbucks stole our idea!

During last year’s holiday season, the coffee giant rounded up musicians from around the world (156 countries, to be exact) and invited them sing “All You Need Is Love” at exactly the same time.

That’s a great idea, right?!  It was ours!

Well…ok…maybe that’s a bit of an exaggeration to say that Starbucks “stole” our idea.  Perhaps the more accurate statement is: “Starbucks had a great idea and I wish we’d thought of... Continue Reading

Beware of the Pop Quiz
By Nikki H | 1 Comments

By day I work as an assistant in the marketing department of a large international corporation. A couple weeks ago in a staff meeting, a member of my team played an interesting joke on the rest of us. She got up to share what she had been working on. And then she said that in 5 minutes, the CFO would walk in the door and ask everyone, “What have you done for me lately?” Meaning, my teammates would have to state, succinctly, what they had done in the past quarter to impact this multi-billion dollar business. Wow. Talk about tension!

As it turns out, she hadn’t actually invited the CFO to our meeting (thankfully!), but it would’ve made for an interesting discussion! And I wondered that if I was similarly put on the spot – but in regards to my personal life – how would I fare? If I had to distill down the all the actions I take on a daily basis to the handful of actions that really, truly matter and make a difference my life, what would I be left with? And if someone I highly respected and admired were to ask me the following... Continue Reading

Free Hugs - A Growing Phenomenon?
By Laura S | 0 Comments

I encountered the following scene walking down Boylston Street in front of Boston’s Prudential Center:

Could this group of young folks be out to, dare I say, give free hugs? Outrageous! Outrageously awesome that is. Who doesn’t need a free hug once in a while? It sure made my day. Whatever nonsense that was running through my mind before was soon replaced by a big smile for this random act of sunshine. Thanks kids.

Check out Nikki’s Free Hugs blog post to view the original inspiration for this love spreading phenomenon. I can only hope this is a trend that will spread. Now let me find some poster board and a magic marker…
